Gays Mills, Wisconsin's apple capital, is about two hours driving time west of Madison, 90 minutes south of La Crosse and 90 minutes north of Dubuque, Iowa.
Gays Mills lies in the heart of Wisconsin's Driftless Region, and is extremely hilly and heavily wooded. That regional designation derives from the fact that the area escaped being glaciated in the last glacial period. The term "driftless" indicates the lack of glacial drift, the material left behind by retreating continental glaciers.
The village is nestled in the Ocooch hills in the northern half of Crawford county, the second county north of the Illinois border, along the Mississippi river.
